Beethoven's Diabelli Variations in particular can rarely have received a reading that is at once so magisterial and assured yet so natural and unassuming. The fruit of years of experience, every bar is touched with character and individuality while remaining true to Beethoven's monumental spirit. Brendel is no less wry and speculative, playful and profound, in the Op 101 Sonata, holding the active and contemplative sides of Beethoven's volatile nature in perfect equilibrium. ...a treasurable testament indeed...
