At their best, these performances combine rhythmic guile, pungency of detail and an impressive control of the music's long paragraphs. No 97, last and most flamboyant in Haydn's regal line of C major symphonies, is especially fine, whether in the tension and mystery of the first-movement coda, the whining, nasal al ponticello violins... in the Adagio... or the vivid sense of comic conspiracy in the finale.
