This is the new Italian sound of renaissance church music: a gentle vibrato, but a wonderfully loose and relaxed sound with a kind of breathy production. In the normal four-voice Palestrina texture both the two top
voices are taken by women; but the sopranos are extremely light in their sound so they never dominate the
texture, and the altos are of that wonderful variety that I have so far heard only from Italians, with a firm and
infinitely attractive chest register that goes confidently down to a low F… the Camerata Nova bring across the spirit and the polyphonic vitality of his music with astonishing power. Considerable credit must go to Luigi Taglioni for producing such a gentle and controlled ensemble.
