About
In 1961, KQED San Francisco filmed a series of Lehmann's master classes at the Music Academy of the West for National Educational Television (Thirteen/WNET). In the course of these classes, Lehmann offers important interpretive insights, shares some of her life's story, and even performs several passages with singular expressive force, albeit in a baritone sprechtstimme (she herself candidly quips, "Ihave always in my life done things very thoroughly, so I have lost my voice thoroughly").

Not only do you learn an immense amount about the interpretation of 16 great German songs, you also encounter, in Lotte Lehmann, a uniquely warm, alive, witty, emotionally charged human being who can move you more by semi-speaking a song than most could from singing it.

Lehmann could be in inspirational teacher, though not all her pupils came away with happy memories (try reading Marilyn Horne's autobiography). However, she was never less than charismatic, and in these two extraordinary masterclasses she covers a good deal of Lieder and opera repertory. In the opera class she actually sings - need I say more?
