With Nicolai Gedda and Janet Baker in their prime, a French orchestra lending Gallic bite to the colouring and Prêtre securing commitment and vitality, there's a pact to be made! By way of epilogue Cleopatra is utterly transfixing.
March 2014
It doesn't get much better than Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both at the peak of their powers; George Prêtre marshals his French forces with élan and just enough greasepaint in this 'dramatic legend'. Baker's febrile but consummately regal account of La Mort de Cleopatre is a superb bonus.
