About
The libretto (by Christian Heinrich Postel) is based on the legend from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and tells of the love of the goddess Venus for the shepherd Adonis and his subsequent murder by the jealous Mars. Although Keiser was only twenty-three years old at the time, he already had a sovereign command of the Italian, French, and German influences that helped to shape this work. In the instrumentation he drew on all the combinations offered by the baroque orchestra to produce extraordinary musical colour.
