The Passacaglia (1936-37), more familiar as a piano piece, complex and abstract, is also strongly directional with highly virtuoso use of the orchestra. More approachable for general listeners is the incidental music for Moliére's Le malade imaginaire (1934). This is le bourgeois gentilhomme crossed with Pulcinella... More important is the hefty dollop of what we might now call klezmer. It makes for a delightful score, like Schulhoff only better written.
