Awards and reviews

February 2006

There are exhilarating things on this disc. Austrian Erich Zeisl (1905-1959) fled his homeland in 1938, eventually to America, and died just as he was achieving some recognition. Wolfgang Holzmair sings beautifully… and Cord Garben's accompaniments are, as always, supportive and yet imaginative.

July 2006

It must be a joyous experience to bring these long-neglected songs to light. Although unmistakably of his time, Zeisl was a traditionalist in the best sense and responded to each poem with an elegant melody. This must rank as one of Holzmair's most important discs and in rediscovering Zeisl's Lieder we can learn a new chapter in the fragmented story of the Lied in the mid-20th century.
