Particularly impressive are the Ballades… It's hard to imagine a more beautiful rendition of the lyrical second theme of the G minor Ballade, Op. 23, or of the yearning opening melody of the F minor last Ballade.

…Ax… explores the Mazurkas' complex inner world with rare affection, attentive to detail yet exaggerating nothing and always maintaining an air of civilised discourse. His technique in the daunting demands of the Ballades and Scherzos is so masterly that you almost forget its comprehensive range of the way even the highest hurdle is taken with yards to spare. Generous and big-handed Ax's Chopin is noble, grandly aristocratic and, above all, heartfelt.
