The Leipzigers aren't short on delicacy, supple rubato or sensitivity to subtly shifting moods and colours. But without conveying the feeling that they're imposing anything on the music, they manage to bring out darker undercurrents at the climax of the first movement, and almost all the way through the slow movement. The Tailleferre and Milhaud quartets may be slighter, but the Leipzigers bring the same refined seriousness to this music too, with excellent results.
