About
Following on from their critically-acclaimed first disc of songs of Roger Quilter, English song enthusiasts Mark Stone and Stephen Barlow have produced the second volume in their four-disc series. This tetralogy will comprise the first complete edition of Quilter’s songs. Volume two includes a number of his greatest works – such as his only song cycle, To Julia, and his William Blake songs – together with world-première recordings, including all the settings of his own poetry. It is a wonderful selection of English song, which will delight aficionados and novices alike. The booklet gives the complete texts, detailed notes, and part two of the composer’s biography.

Stone's high, slightly grainy baritone and incisive diction deliver Quilter's often long, soaring lines with compelling fervour, and Barlow's fluent accompaniment is the opposite of the dreaded effete tinkling sometimes inflicted on these songs.

Once again, the range of colour and dynamic in his singing is impressive, precisely geared to the words of each song...Going from one song to another is a delight...As in previous discs from Mark Stone, Stephen Barlow in his accompaniments matches his partner perfectly.

The mood of these songs is wistful, fairly conventional and often with intricate piano parts, elegantly played by Stephen Barlow.Mark Stone's performances are assured and persuasive...this Volume 2 is full of pleasures, not least the song cycle To Julia, to poems of Robert Herrick.
