These recordings of Vaughan Williams, reissued in the British Composers series, were made by Vernon Handley and the London Philharmonic in the late 1970s. ..the wonderfully rich and evocative A London Symphony… benefits from the full-bodied analogue recording, here transferred at a higher level. The later CfP recording is often more analytical but the analogue sound is warmer, more airy, yet with a splendid bite in such passages as the brassy intrusions in the first movement. It strikes me, too, that there is more mystery and hushed intensity in this earlier account, a greater sense of ecstasy.
