The singing and the recorded 'prescence', vividly capturing the reverberant acoustic of the chapel, make for an utterly bewitching experience, if I may use that term in the context of sacred music. These unison plainchant settings, though austere and spare, are timeless, serene and compelling.

Stephen Cleobury is at pains to make us notice the acoustic, pausing between verses longer than I expected, encouraging us to follow the sound as it recedes down the nave. And what a sound, superbly captured by the recording; it's as though the choir is giving thanks to the building by exciting its historical echoes, and making us more fully aware of its past.

The men of the choir sing with vigour and beauty of tone but also phrase remarkably well… The easy flow of the answer-and-response structure of the psalms is a delight to the ear and the spirit. The highest recommendation, then, for repertoire, performance and outstanding recorded sound.
