An absolute classic… As the terrible Hun, Ruggero Raimondi has one of the finest parts… what makes this essential listening is the duo of Carlo Bergonzi and Christina Deutekom. Bergonzi, then in his 49th year, phrases each aria and duet with such elegance and fervour that he transforms Foresto, often dismissed as a cipher, into a passionate character. When it is performed like this, Attila seems to be one of the very strongest of all the early Verdi operas.
