About

Christmas in the Middle Ages was not a celebration of purely liturgical nature; there were plenty of popular customs. We have evidence of the first crib scenes and nativity plays, and of the first German carols to be sung. The first examples of early polyphony are featured in a remarkable number of Christmas songs. On this CD, the Ensemble for Early Music Augsburg attempts to reconstruct how Christmas might have sounded between 1200 and 1400; you will have to conjure up the smell of cinnamon and spices yourself.
