This is in no way intended as damning with faint praise when I say that the main draw of this set conducted by Herbert von Karajan is the majesty and opulence of the performance by the Berliner Philharmoniker: never has the very opening sounded so seductively luxurious. Helge Brilioth is heartbreaking in Siegfried's death scene, and Helga Dernesch offers a gritty but passionate Brünnhilde.
