Hans Rosbaud was one of the unsung heroes of mid-20th-century music, who alongside Scherchen, Bour and Maderna, gave thoroughly rehearsed and assimilated performances and premieres of the widest possible range of music. This is his greatest achievement: Stravinsky's dazzling late ballet, as original in its way as The Rite of Spring, the Renaissance-to-Boulez idiom absorbed with total confidence.
