Vanhal was one of the greatest composers of the Viennese Classicist period, and two of his famous contemporaries, Haydn and Mozart are known to have regarded him highly.
The three cello concerti on this recording date from1785–1787. Péter Szabó, the soloist and conductor of this CD, came across the manuscript parts in the Musical Collection of the National Museum in Prague. Their elaborate style and varied themes elevates them to the rank of the most inspired Viennese Classical concerti.
