François-Xavier Roth was born into a musical family in Paris in 1971, and initially trained as a flautist before studying conducting; he won the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in 2000, which led to him spending two years as Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra (with whom he has subsequently recorded the Bartók violin concertos and The Panufnik Legacies – a collection of new works by ten young composers commissioned as part of the LSO Panufnik Scheme).
