Norwegian lyric-dramatic soprano Lise Davidsen was born in 1987 and studied at the Grieg Academy of Music and the Royal Danish Music Conservatory, initially training as a mezzo; in 2015 she came to international attention after winning first prize in both Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition and the Queen Sonja Competition. Following her debut at Wigmore Hall two years later, the Financial Times described Davidsen as ‘fully armed and ready to take on the world’, whilst Opera Today praised her ‘hugely powerful, gloriously silken and richly glossy…incredibly dramatic voice’.

Davidsen’s opera repertoire includes the title-roles in Cherubini’s Medea and Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos (with which she made her Glyndebourne debut in 2017), Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana, and Third Norn, Ortlinde and Freia in Wagner’s Ring Cycle. In 2019 she will debut at the Metropolitan Opera (as Lisa in The Queen of Spades) and Bayreuth as Elisabeth.

In 2018 Davidsen signed to Decca Classics, and later that year was named as Young Artist of the Year at the Gramophone Awards (although her debut solo album of Strauss and Wagner was still in the pipeline at that stage).
