Tara Erraught
The Irish mezzo Tara Erraught was born in Dundalk in 1986 and trained at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, winning second prize at the Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition at just 20; shortly afterwards she took up a place on the training programme at the Bayerische Staatsoper, and came to widespread attention when she stepped in to replace an indisposed Vesselina Kasarova as Romeo in Bellini’s I Capuleti in 2011. (Subsequent roles at the theatre have included Orlofsky, Cenerentola, Hänsel, Dorabella, Despina, Rosina, Susanna and Der Komponist). She made her major UK debut at Glyndebourne in 2014 as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, a production which was engulfed by controversy after numerous UK critics made adverse remarks about her physical suitability for the role, sparking a furious response from various high-profile singers who spoke up to defend Erraught and to criticise body-shaming in the industry as a whole. Erraught’s discography includes the Glyndebourne Rosenkavalier on DVD and Blu-ray from Opus Arte, Annio on Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s La clemenza di Tito, Siébel in Gounod’s Faust, the Kitchen-Boy in Dvořák’s Rusalka, and The Sandman on Robin Ticciati’s recording of Hänsel und Gretel.
