The German/French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt was born in Heidelberg in 1982; early successes included a Credit Suisse Young Artist Award, a Borletti Buitoni Trust Fellowship, and a BBC New Generation Artist position from 2010-2012.

His discography includes the Enescu Octet with Vilde Frang and friends (which won a Diapason d’Or in 2018), the CPE Bach Cello Concertos with Arcangelo (winner of the Concerto category at the 2017 BBC Music Magazine Awards), 4 Cities (a recital with pianist Fazil say which includes music by Say himself, Shostakovich, Janáček, and Debussy), JS Bach’s Viola da Gamba sonatas with Jonathan Cohen, and Weinberg and Shostakovich cello concertos on Channel Classics (‘Altstaedt plays with easy bravura’) – The Sunday Times). He has premiered numerous significant new works by composers including Sebastian Fagerlund, Nico Muhly, Fazil Say and Matthias Pintscher.

Altstaedt also has a parallel career as a conductor, and has worked with orchestras including the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Aurora, the SWR Stuttgart, and the Haydn Philharmonie.
