The German cellist Leonard Elschenbroich was born in Frankfurt in 1985 and studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Cologne Music Academy; early successes included a Borletti Buitoni Trust Award, the Leonard Bernstein Award, and a spell as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist.

Elschenbroich’s discography includes the twentieth-century French recital Siècle (‘Elschenbroich demonstrates virtuosity and musicianship of a high order’ – BBC Music Magazine), Beethoven, Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov Cello Sonatas with his regular partner Alexei Grynyuk, and the world premiere recording of Mark Simpson’s Night Music on NMC. Contemporary music plays a significant role in Elschenbroich’s career: he premiered Simpson’s Cello Concerto in 2018, and has also given the first performances of works by Luca Lombardi, Arlene Sierra, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. Since founding the Orquesta Filarmonica de Bolivia in 2012, he has also had a parallel career in conducting, predominantly in Central and South America.
