Lisitsa began posting performance videos on YouTube in 2007, and quickly amassed a substantial social media following, notching up millions of views for her performances of Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin; she self-funded a recording of the complete Rachmaninov Piano Concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra three years later, and was signed by Decca Records in 2012. The label released her Rachmaninov recording the following year, with BBC Music Magazine praising her ‘unsentimental fluidity and togetherness with her orchestral colleagues’, and The Arts Desk her emphasis on the ‘jazzy boldness and dark humour’ in the music. Subsequent releases on Decca include a live recital from the Royal Albert Hall, a Liszt album, Ives’s Violin Sonatas with Hilary Hahn, and Tchaikovsky’s complete piano music.
