Japanese dramatic mezzo Mihoko Fujimura was born in 1966 and trained at Tokyo’s National University of Fine Arts and Music and in Munich; she made her Bayreuth debut (as Fricka) in 2002, and returned to the Festival on a regular basis over the next decade. She is particularly associated with Wagner and Mahler, though her repertoire also encompasses Verdi’s Azucena, Amneris and Eboli, Bizet’s Carmen, and Strauss’s Octavian and Klytaemnestra.

Fujimura’s discography includes Brangaene on Antonio Pappano’s recording of Tristan und Isolde (opposite Plácido Domingo and Nina Stemme as the lovers) on EMI, Mahler’s Third Symphony with Jonathan Nott and the Bamberger Symphoniker (‘Fujimura's voice is mysterious but young and fresh’ – BBC Music Magazine), Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Christian Thielemann, Herbert Blomstedt, Mariss Jansons, Kent Nagano and Seiji Ozawa, Tippett’s A Child of Our Time with Sir Colin Davis on LSO Live, and Fricka on DVD and Blu-ray from Bayreuth.
