Patricia Kopatchinskaja was born into a musical family in Chişinău in 1977; her family relocated to Vienna when she was 12, where she studied at the University of Music and the Performing Arts before doing postgraduate studies in Bern. Known for her idiosyncratic performing style and programming, Kopatchinskaja’s repertoire includes baroque and contemporary music – she has premiered works by Fazil Say, Heinz Holliger, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Tigran Mansurian and Joanna Doderer, and is also a composer in her own right (her violin concerto Hortus animae was premiered in 2014). Her many awards include an ECHO Klassik Award, Gramophone’s Recording of the Year, and an International Classical Music Award for her album of concertos by Bartók, Ligeti and Eötvös on Naïve, a Grammy for her arrangement of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden for string orchestra on Alpha in 2017, and a BBC Music Magazine Award for her Beethoven Violin Concerto with Philippe Herreweghe and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées in 2010.
