Italian contralto Sonia Prina was born in Lombardy in 1975 and studied at the Conservatoire Giuseppe Verdi and the La Scala Academy in Milan; she made her debut on the theatre’s main stage at just 23, as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia under Riccardo Chailly and with Juan Diego Flórez as Almaviva.

She is particularly associated with baroque repertoire and trouser-roles such as Handel’s Polinesso (Ariodante), Orlando, Catone, Rinaldo and Giulio Cesare; his discography includes Disinganno on Emmanuelle Haïm’s BBC Music Magazine Award-winning recording of Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, Bradamante on Alan Curtis’s Alcina on DG Archiv, the solo Gluck album Heroes in Love on Glossa, and (on DVD and blu-ray) the title-role in Robert Carsen’s production of Rinaldo from the Glyndebourne Festival.
