Florian Boesch

Born in Saarbrücken in 1971, the Austrian baritone Florian Boesch is particularly renowned for his visceral yet sensitive interpretations of lieder; the son of a professional baritone, he studied with his grandmother (the soprano Ruthilde Boesch) and then with Robert Holl in Vienna. He works regularly with the pianist Roger Vignoles; their recording of Krenek’s Reisebuch aus den österreichischen Alpen was shortlisted for a Gramophone Award in 2017, and an album of Carl Loewe made the finals of the BBC Music Magazine Awards in 2012. Boesch’s discography also includes Haydn’s Seasons and Dvorak’s Stabat mater with Philippe Herreweghe, schubert’s three great song-cycles with Malcolm Martineau, and Brahms’s Deutsches Requiem with Sir Roger Norrington.

Though Boesch specialises in recital and oratorio work, he appears regularly at the Theater an der Wien and Staatsoper Unter den Linden, where his roles have included Berg’s Wozzeck, Handel’s Saul, Zebul (Jephtha) and Tiridate (Radamisto), and Méphistophéles in Terry Gilliam’s staging of Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust.
