American tenor Lawrence Brownlee was born in Ohio in 1972 and specialises in high-lying bel canto roles. He studied in Indiana and made his professional operatic debut with Virginia Opera as Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, which would become one of his signature-roles – he has since performed it at houses including the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro Real, the Wiener Staatsoper and the Opéra Nationale de Paris. He is also in great international demand for roles including Rossini’s Ramiro (La cenerentola), Idreno (Semiramide), Giacomo (La donna del lago) and Le Comte Ory, Donizetti’s Tonio La fille du régiment) and Ernesto ( Don Pasquale), Arturo in Bellini’s I puritani, and - beyond bel canto – the Italian Singer in Strauss’s Der rosenkavalier, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, and the tenor part in Orff’s Carmina burana.
