Released on Harmonia Mundi on 24th April, Timothy Ridout and Jonathan Ware's new album Alto Appassionato explores what the award-winning British viola-player describes as 'the very tightly-knit musical world in Paris at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century'. Focusing on the rise of the viola as a solo instrument in its own right, the recording features several competition-pieces written to showcase its virtuoso potential, as well as Ridout's own transcription of César Franck's much-loved Violin Sonata from 1886.
At the end of the month Timothy and Jonathan paid us a visit in Leamington Spa to perform the Franck sonata in full, preceded by Tim's deft arrangements of four popular Fauré mélodies and Henri Büsser's showstopping Appassionato before sitting down with me to discuss some of the inspirations behind the album, the delicate art of transferring vocal music onto an instrument, their approach to recording sessions, and the wider joys of the viola repertoire...
