The British pianist and musicologist Simon Callaghan has devoted much of his career to championing the music of neglected composers, recording concertos by Carl Reinecke, Joseph Rheinberger and Bernhard Scholz and solo albums dedicated to Rebecca Clarke, George Dyson, Cyril Scott and William Busch, to name but a few.
Simon visited us in Leamington Spa last month with a 'tasting menu' of rarities, including miniatures by Jean Louis Nicodé, Roger Sacheverell Coke, Clarke, Busch and Dyson, bringing their stories to life along the way with some fascinating anecdotes and insights about each composer. In this filmed excerpt from the evening, he recounts how a chance encounter with Coke's music inspired him to write a doctoral thesis on the composer, and also introduces and performs two short pieces by Nicodé (who was an early advocate for the music of Bruckner, Strauss and others).
