Franz Schmidt was a cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who premiered his symphony in 1913. The work has remained in the orchestra’s repertoire ever since. It is coupled with Träumerei am Kamin, an interlude from Richard Strauss's opera, Intermezzo.
