Buxtehude: Seven Sonatas, Op. 1 BuxWV 252-258

Although Dietrich Buxtehude is famous above all for his organ music, his chamber music is virtually unknown. In the mid-1690s, Buxtehude published two collections of sonatas for violin, viola da gamba and basso continuo. It is the works of the first collection (1694) – designated Opus 1 in the print – that Arcangelo has recorded here.

Fritz Busch was one the greatest German conductors of the first half of the twentieth century. At the invitation of John Christie he became music director of Glyndebourne in 1934. This set presents performances of three Mozart operas from 1935 and 1936, as well as excerpts from a 1950 Così fan tutte and a 1951 Idomeneo.
